Why We Don't Formulate with Essential Oils
We are commonly asked why our skincare products do not formulate with essential oils. Essential oils are an easy way to add fragrance to a skincare formulation without compromising its ability to be categorized as a natural product with no synthetic fragrances. While this sounds promising, essential oils are not as natural as they seem, and have been green washed significantly in the last twenty years while generating billions of dollars in revenue.
Essential oils require extensive processing & extracting methods using between 10-100 pounds of raw plant matter to create just a 1/2 ounce bottle of essential oil. The end result is a volatile organic compound (VOCs), a product far removed from its origins. Since essential oils are categorized as cosmetics, they are not as regulated & tested as dietary supplements.
To us at Chesapeake Goods & Co., using essential oils is an inferior way to add scent to a skincare product. While it may be easier to use a few drops of essential oil, we deeply care about the safety & efficacy of our formulations. We have crafted our way of infusing whole plants into skincare providing skin supportive properties & a pleasant scent.
