How We Do Tallow Better

For much of my life I have struggled with dry hands. A few years into attempting to repair my dry hands, I learned that beef tallow's occlusive nature can form a barrier that absorbs quickly into our skin, making it an ideal moisturizer. Beef tallow is also a great source of vitamins & minerals.

This led me to purchase tallow products that I used on my hands, face & body. However I did notice that the essential oils in the product made my eyes watery, itchy, and irritated. Turns out, essential oils applied to the skin can cause allergic reactions in many people and can be a common skin irritant. I found that many of the tallow brands available rely on essential oils to cover up the odor of the product

I learned how to render tallow on my own without using essential oils. I sourced beef suet from a local family owned farm that uses regenerative farming practices. Over the course of several years I perfected this method- a triple wet rendering method with salt. Suet is combined with water and salt, heated at a very low temperature over a few hours, and cooled. The impurities sink to the bottom. This process is done three times over, and leaves a pure product suitable for skin application.

All of our tallow products are combined with jojoba oil, a sustainable ester wax that is sourced in the United States and requires little water to grow. Jojoba oil is a perfect carrier oil for tallow because it is also a non clogging skin oil that absorbs quickly leaving skin soft & smooth. Jojoba Oil is also a great source of vitamin E.

While perfecting this tallow method, I also learned about dry herbal flower infusions. Different beneficial flowers for skin are infused in jojoba oil over a period of six weeks, leaving an antioxidant packed and lightly scented jojoba oil to be whipped with our purified tallow. We currently offer flower infusions with Lavender or Chamomile & Calendula.
